Deep Tissue Massage

What is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage is a technique designed to realign deep layers of muscle, tendons, ligaments and other connective tissue. Many typical massage strokes and moves are used in this method. The difference is that these moves are performed much slower and with more pressure, usually in concentrated areas. This procedure is especially beneficial for tight, tense areas such as the neck, shoulders and lower back.

Purpose of Deep Tissue Massage

Even a slight injury will result in adhesion of the muscle tissue. These adhesions, also called knots, result in pain and stiffness. These knots are a result of inflammation and tearing of the muscle. These injured areas will form stiff scar tissue which will bind to surrounding areas to decrease movement. Additionally, oxygen delivery becomes much more difficult for these areas. Deep tissue massage aims to break down and relieve these areas of rigidness to restore movement and minimize pain. Several sessions of this massage can alleviate pain caused by rigid muscles that have existed for years.

Due to its nature, slight soreness can occur after this treatment. This can be minimized through effective communication during the massage. Either way, this pain will subside within one or two days. Every client is different, so it is important to note that each person will have different pain thresholds. This technique is extremely effective and at the same time can be somewhat strenuous, whether you are the practitioner or the client.

Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

This form of therapy is corrective, therapeutic, and detoxifying. Through the kneading and pulling of muscles, oxygen flow is increased. Lactic acid and other debris can become contained inside tight muscles. Deep tissue massage can release these toxins, which can easily be flushed away with water.

Deep tissue is an excellent technique to help people with chronic pain, athletes, and those who have suffered injury. It is an extremely effective pain reducing method. Many proponents attribute results like and better than those achieved through normal physical therapy and medication.

Swedish
Massage

The term "Swedish Massage" refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart.

Swedish massage was developed in the 1700's by a Swedish doctor named Per Henrik Ling.

It is an invigorating rather than a deeply relaxing form of massage that makes you feel uplifted and energized, yet calm and relaxed.

Purpose of Swedish Massage

The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles.

Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. Swedish massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress management. It also has many specific medical uses.

Swedish Massage Techniques

Swedish massage techniques include: long strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, percussion, vibration, effleurage, and shaking motions.

Benefits of Swedish Massage

Swedish massage feels good, is relaxing and invigorating. It affects the nerves, muscles, glands, and circulation, while promoting health and wellbeing.

Indian Head Massage

What is Indian Head Massage?

Indian Head Massage has been practised in India for over a thousand years as part of everyday family life as was a form of grooming.

Indian head massage was brought to the west by Narendra Mehta in the 1970's and the therapy was extended to include the face, ears, neck, shoulders and upper arms. Indian Head Massage works on areas affected by mental and emotional stress.

In Western culture today we spend much of our time in our heads, so this treatment can really help to calm the mind and is surprisingly deeply relaxing. The treatment uses a form of massage which includes shiatsu and acupressure techniques. It helps to relieve muscular discomfort and tension as well as calming the spirit and aiding relaxation. It also improves circulation in the head, enhances the senses and promotes clear thinking.

What can I expect during an Indian Head Massage?

The massage usually begins with the upper back, where a combination of deep massage and pressure points help to relax the muscles and to loosen knots. Moving through the shoulders and upper arms further releases the common areas for holding stress and tension, and then working deeply into the neck where tension accumulates, relieving headaches and improving cerebral spinal fluid circulation.

Moving up to the scalp, techniques are used that stimulate, relax and revive the whole of the head, increasing circulation and promoting healthy hair. Finally, a gentle face massage with techniques that may help circulation, skin tone, sinus and headache problems.

The Benefits of Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage helps to sooth away stress and tension, leaving you relaxed, revitalised and re-energised. This is a very popular treatment, perfect for promoting a calm mind, a stress-free body and for maintaining optimum health.
